Notes: This article’s Indonesian translation available at Teknolagi.

Telkomsel has just launched new campaign called Telkomsel You’ve Got Mail. I call it as campaign because the promo was not a new thing. Basically Telkomsel provides mobile email client program (J2ME Java-based) for customer that can POP3 or IMAP from any mail servers that support that protocols.

Annoying thing is you will be charged on monthly basis for using the email client. I don’t know who develop the application, but they have branded the program with name Telkomsel You’ve Got Mail. Monthly subscription fee is Rp 150000, expensive and not to mention GPRS fee is excluded (Rp 12/kB). To activate this service, users have to dial *969#.

In this freeware and open-source era actually we don’t need such payware. There are a lot of freeware J2ME program that can do exactly or better POP email. GMail is the best in the market if you have Google Mail account, but it is not a POP3 client. By googling a bit in the web I could find mMail, vimoMail, or even you don’t have to find it since many smartphones already have such program pre-installed in Symbian (Nokia, SE M600i, P990i, W950, W920), Windows Mobile (Dopod, Samsung i600), PalmOS (Treo, etc).

So do you still need Telkomsel You’ve Got Mail?

Movie Review: Ocean Thirteen

My rating: 7 from 10.

Ocean ThirteenWhat are the odds of getting even? Danny Ocean and the gang would have only one reason to pull off their most ambitious and riskiest casino heist–to defend one of their own. But they’re going to need more than luck on their side to break The Bank.Ruthless casino owner Willy Bank never imagined that the odds were against him when he double-crossed Danny Ocean’s friend and mentor Reuben Tishkoff, putting the distraught Reuben in a hospital bed in critical condition. But Bank miscalculated–badly. He may have taken down one of the original Ocean’s eleven, but he left the others standing and, worse for him, gave them a shared purpose: to take Bank down on the night of what should be his greatest triumph–the grand opening of his new casino, appropriately named The Bank. Their strategy is twofold. First they will ruin him financially by turning the tables on the precept that the house always wins. But that’s just money.

I didn’t get to excited when watching Ocean Eleven and Twelve. The plot was to flat for me to keep me awake. But this sequel is better. A con show packed with comedy and big star (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Al Pacino, so on). At least it is quite a good film and I didn’t fall asleep.

iView Media Pro 3

Tired of using iPhoto for Mac, I tried to find a suitable photo browser and management software to replace it. After searching everywhere and sadly there ia no ACDSee for Mac, finally I found a software called iView Media Pro 3. Last year iView was acquired by Microsoft, then this June 2007 they just launched updated version called Microsoft Expression Media. And as usual, Microsoft ruined a good software into a mesh. They divide the software into 4 different licensing: Expression Web, Blend, Design, and Media (sigh…).

iView CatalogI downloaded original one from iView website, called iView MediaPro 3.1. It is an image browser, catalog, manage, and editor. Almost what I need is available, from photo browsing, cropping, resizing, rotating, and full-screen showing which iPhoto fails to perform. There are so many techie stuff in the application even I got a little confused to catch up. It is for an advanced user, by some effort can be used by everyone. I think that iView is the best image photo browser for Mac OS X in the market although it is not free.

Escape to Paradise Island

Last week I went to Bali for holiday. Actually I took my annual leave with thanks to Air Asia, which only costed me Rp 180,000 round trip (very cheap huh?). Together with Yulia we spend four days three nights there.

The first impression of Bali is its main road all well built, high quality asphalt that make cars move smoothly. The quality of the road is far better than Jakarta’s. Next is you can find polution is very low, with exception in Kuta. And since 93% of population is Hinduism, then you can hardly find a mosque there. Wherever we walked we saw Pura in every corner. Walking was also a pleasure in Bali, especially in Kuta, because pedestrian walk had been built and well designed although not to wide.
